This
year’s Teen Summit was held at IVCC on
Wednesday, June 18, 2008. The day began with The Tortoise & The Hare skit by staff followed by Self Advocacy Jeopardy. 20 young people attended and received information on Transitioning through
the Teen Summit entitled "Transition
Olympics: Passing the Torch to Life After High School". The Teen
Summit is designed to foster independent living skills and self-advocacy
skills. We had USA Olympic Teams
represented by the students in attendance to participate in the activities for
the day. The teams were: Gymnastics,
Track & Field, Equestrian & Baseball.
There were presentations on "Internet Safety" by Sarah Migas
from The Illinios Attorney General’s Office, "Welcome to the Real World
" which simulated a month of daily spending, budgeting, and bill paying by
the U of I Bureau & LaSalle County Extension Offices, and "Parade of
Choices” in which participants created a pennant showing their choices for
future independent living by Consuelo Puente & Stacy Yusim from Equip for
Equality. The day came to a close with an
awards ceremony where each participant received a torch trophy, gold medal and
a patriotic bag with many prizes. Each
participant received a t-shirt, visor, many prizes, lunch and snacks. The
participants’ evaluations told us that they enjoyed the day and were generally
happy with everything offered. I would like to sincerely thank everyone that had a part in
making the day such a big success, especially the IVCIL staff!
