Sometimes understanding the special education system can feel like you are drowning in a sea. Are you looking for someone willing to give you a helping hand in the sea of special education (or throw you a life preserver)? Are you a parent of a child with a disability that needs an advocate to help you in advocating for the needs and rights of your child with your school district?
Our Youth Advocate provides this service for IVCIL, however, sometimes the need for advocacy is too great for one person to fill. Because of this we have a Volunteer Parent Advocate Registry. These people are willing to step in when needed if our Youth Advocate is not available to help in times of need.
How can a Volunteer Parent Advocate help?
Much like our Youth Advocate (See the School Advocacy tab above)
A VPA could help in one of these these two ways:
- Attend school meetings with parents to help them advocate for their child.
- Give out information and referral services to interested parents.
They can assist a parent by communicating in an effective way that leads to building a respectful
relationship with the school district and getting needed services for their child.
Have general knowledge of the Special Education process, and Special Education laws.
A VPA would only be necessary if our Youth Advocate is not available. Our staff would let you know when you call IVCIL for assistance if the Youth Advocate's schedule is tied up for an extended period. At that time, our staff would give you the option to contact a VPA and provide you with their contact information.
