WHAT IS THE DEAF SERVICES PROGRAM?
IVCIL’s Deaf Services Program is designed to meet the needs of and increase the community options for persons who are deaf / hard-of-hearing / hearing-impaired.
INTERPRETER REFERRAL PROGRAM
The IVCIL maintains an updated list of interpreters who are registered with the Illinois Deaf/Hard of Hearing Commission and who are certified by the State of Illinois. Arrangements for qualified interpreters for agencies that need interpreters are made by the Deaf Services Coordinator.
ADVOCACY SERVICES
The IVCIL supports compliance with the Illinois Deaf/Hard of Hearing Commission’s requirements for qualified interpreters and offers resources to help meet these requirements. The IVCIL advocates for positive social change for persons who are deaf/hard-of-hearing/hearing-impaired.
TTY SERVICES
The IVCIL has application forms for and can assist in obtaining free TTYs for persons with hearing loss and/or speech impairments. Staff conduct training and testing for individuals, agencies, and businesses that have TTYs.
SUPPORT GROUPS
The IVCIL provides educational and peer support for persons with hearing loss.
SENSITIVITY TRAINING
Programs aimed to enlighten the community on understanding and interacting with persons with hearing loss are available on request.
INFORMATION / RESOURCES
Catalogs, newspapers, and magazines on issues related to deafness are available at the Center (Silent News, Deaf Life, NAD Broadcast, etc.). A resource file for persons who are deaf / hard-of-hearing / hearing-impaired is also available.
